Club rides restart

Some of you will already be aware that on 9 March 2021, British Cycling announced an update to their Covid advice under the ‘Way Forward Framework’, details of which can be seen on the below email.

As a result, the committee have decided that, barring further government announcements, club rides will resume with effect from Monday 29 March.

Club rides will initially be limited to a maximum of 15 riders (which is a good turn out for the Wheelers) who must adhere to 1M+ social distancing. Additionally, riders must observe best practice in respect of hygiene, self – sufficiency and equipment sharing.

It is of course entirely up to each member to decide whether they are comfortable in returning to club rides and in making your decision you may wish to consider whether or not you have yet been vaccinated, your state of health and personal circumstances. Nobody should feel under any pressure to take part in club rides unless they are completely comfortable in doing so.

Thankfully, I had my first Covid jab 5 weeks ago and should receive my second in the next few weeks, so, weather permitting, I will be riding on Monday 29 March and look forward to seeing you all soon.

Death of former RWCC member Brian Rudge

The club has been informed by Ellen Rudge – Tezcan, of the death of her father, Brian Rudge who was a former member of Rotherham Wheelers.

Brian suffered a stroke on 18 March and sadly passed away on 14 April 2020. The funeral was held under Covid 19 restrictions.

When circumstances permit, the family intend to hold a memorial service and will notify the club in order that anyone wishing to attend may do so.

RWCC – Centenary Events Update

After careful consideration the committee have decided to cancel the Centenary Social which was planned for Sunday 21 June 2020 and the Centenary Time Trial which was planned for Saturday 4 July 2020, both of which will be rearranged for suitable dates in 2021.

You will recall that at the start of the current lockdown, a decision was made together with Matt Porter of Sportive HQ to postpone our Centenary Sportive which was originally planned for Sunday 17 May 2020 until Sunday 13 September 2020. That position remains unchanged, but this will be reviewed and a further announcement will be made in mid July as to whether the event should go ahead.

Regrettable though these decisions are and despite announcement of the government’s lockdown exit strategy yesterday, the committee feel that the situation is so unpredictable as to make planning impossible, that the possibility of social distancing restrictions still being in force can not be ignored and also that even when restrictions are lifted, many people are likely to lack the confidence to attend large social or sporting events.

I will be writing to all former members to inform them of this decision which will also be announced via the club Facebook page.

RWCC – CENTENARY SPORTIVE POSTPONEMENT

Please be aware that as a result of the latest government advice concerning the Covid 19 emergency, it has been necessary to postpone our centenary sportive which was due to be held on Sunday 17 May 2020.

We now intend to run this event on Sunday 13 September 2020. This proposal will be kept under review in accordance with government advice.

It is still intended that our centenary social on Sunday 21 June and time trial on Saturday 4 July will go ahead, but this is a rapidly developing situation and the possibility remains that it may be necessary to re-schedule these events.

I will keep you informed of developments..

Reminder – 2020 subscriptions & Centenary Social

This is a reminder to the 18 individuals who have not yet paid their 2020 club subscriptions that if you wish to retain your membership, subscriptions must be paid in full by 31 March at the latest. Membership of persons who have not paid their subscriptions by this date will be regarded as lapsed in accordance with club rules.

May I remind you that membership may be paid by cash or cheque (payable to Rotherham Wheelers CC) either to me in person or delivered to my home address. Alternatively you may pay by BACS to the club account details of which I will provide on request.

All members and many former members will have received an email from me about 2 weeks ago concerning our Centenary Social on Sunday 21 June 2020. Attendance at the event is limited to 160 and indications are that it is likely to be over subscribed. To assist with ticket allocation I did ask members and former members to indicate their ticket requirements by 22 March. Current and former members will be issued 2 tickets free of charge and additional tickets may be purchased at £5.00 each.

There has been a good response from former members, but I have still not heard from the majority of members.

The committee and I have, and will continue to put a great deal of effort into organising our centenary events but we need your support. If you haven’t done so already, please decide whether or not you wish to attend the Centenary Social and let me know your ticket requirements ASAP but by 22 March at the latest.

Your cooperation will be greatly appreciated.

RWCC Centenary Rides – Sunday 17 May 2020

Rotherham Wheelers Centenary Ride is scheduled for Sunday 17 May 2020 and is now only 15 weeks and 5 days away. The event is being run by Sportive HQ who are specialists in their field and was recently listed in Cycling Weekly. Entry to the event is via the Sportive HQ website (www.sportivehq.com) and priced at £32.50 which includes a high quality commemorative medal, feed stations, mechanical support and first aid back – up.

In keeping with the centenary theme, Sportive HQ have put together two excellent courses of 100 miles and 67 miles (nominally 100km) both of which start and finish in Rotherham passing through the exquisite scenery of rural South Yorks and the Derbyshire Peak District. These will truly be rides to remember!

Members are reminded that the club has agreed to provide 20 people to assist with marshalling and other duties and to consider this commitment before applying to ride the event in a private capacity.

The good news is that those 20 volunteers will include 6 members who will ride the course in support of participants.

I am compiling a list of Wheelers members who are willing to volunteer to assist with this historic event. Please let me know (preferably by email) whether you wish to volunteer for a general role or as a support rider.

Please help to make this event a success by giving this information the widest circulation. 😀

Watt Bike training 2019

This year’s Watt Bike training programme starts at Rotherham Leisure Complex at 8:00pm Thursday 28 November. The initial course of 6 one hour coached sessions will cost around £60 and this fee includes unlimited access to all facilities at RLC at other times. Subject to demand the course is likely to be followed by a further course of 6 sessions.

Eight Wheelers members have so far signed up for the initial course and there are 2 more places available to Rotherham Wheelers members or members of other local clubs.

Anyone fancying building or maintaining cycling fitness over the winter months is welcome to join us on a first come, first served basis and can sign up by contacting me by email (rotherhamlad1@hotmail.com) or phoning 07751 518488.

RWCC Centenary Jersey

THIS IS A REPEAT REQUEST. Last week I asked members to indicate whether they intend to purchase a centenary jersey and if so what size they require. I AM NOT asking for your money, this information is only required to assist JE James Ltd with ordering sufficient stock. The response has been disappointing so far with only 7 members responding. I can’t believe that this is the extent of interest.

Your committee and the centenary working group continue to work tirelessly to make our centenary year successful and enjoyable for all members, but we do need your support!

I realise that people have work and family commitments and that it’s human nature to sometimes defer decisions. It’s a fact that people also forget – SO THIS IS YOUR REMINDER!

Don’t put it off any longer, avoid disappointment, order your jersey now and help me to help you.

RWCC – centenary jersey

This is the final design of the Wheelers centenary jersey which was agreed at a recent committee meeting.

Our brief was to design a jersey which was instantly recognisable as Rotherham Wheelers, compatible with our existing kit, suitable for club rides and competition wear and distinctly reflected a big milestone in the history of our club. I hope it meets with member’s approval.

The jersey will be available through JE James Ltd in the near future.

We hope that members will show their pride in our club by investing in a centenary jersey to mark our centenary year.

In the meantime, it would be helpful if you could indicate (preferably through Facebook comment) whether you will be purchasing a centenary jersey and what size you will require.

RWCC – 2019 Christmas function & presentation evening

This year’s Christmas function and presentation evening is at 7:00pm for 7:30pm Friday 13 December at The Hind public house, East Bawtry Road, Rotherham.

The type of fare on offer will be dictated by the numbers attending and will either be a sit down meal from a seasonal menu with a choice of starters, mains and desserts including vegetarian options if numbers attending are 32 or less, or if numbers exceed 32 we will eat from a seasonal buffet menu.

In the first instance we are planning for a sit down meal.

Members should already have received an email from me which included details of the sit down menu and are asked to notify me of your menu choices by Friday 29 November. I require a deposit of £11.50 per head with your order, payable by cash, cheque (payable to Rotherham Wheelers) or BACS to the club account. The balance will be payable on the night.

In the event of numbers attending exceeding 32, we will eat from a seasonal buffet menu at a cost of £11.50 per head.

If anyone is unclear about these proposals, please contact me directly.

It is hoped that as many members as possible will attend this event and make it an evening to remember as our club enters its centenary year.
